DCMCO Yahoo Group & Restaurant Database Overview
The DCMCO’s Yahoo group -- called “DC Celiac” – is a place to share information about events and other items of interest to people with Celiac Disease and parents of children with Celiac Disease in Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, and Suburban Maryland. There is a wealth of great information on the DCMCO Yahoo Group page; the Messages, Database and Files sections, in particular, have useful information for members and guests.
Joining, Settings & Communicating with the Group
Because the list serv is moderated, people have to ask to join and all messages are reviewed before being posted to the group; this protects the list from being corrupted by spam and other annoyances.
To join, send a message to the moderator at DCCeliac-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
You can join the list serv without a Yahoo email account (although an email account is free) and get what’s called an “email only” membership. If you want to browse the Group’s website and access either the database or past messages, however, you will need a Yahoo ID (i.e., an email address).
To access the Group, go to www.yahoo.com and select “Groups” from the list on the left-hand side of the screen. Typing “DC Celiac” in the search bar pulls up both the WCSSG group and the local ROCK group (Raising Our Celiac Kids). You can also access your specific groups from your own Yahoo Account page.
Once approved for the list, you can choose to receive emails in several ways: individually (as they are posted to the group), a daily digest (everything posted during that day, in one email), or a weekly digest (everything posted during that week); in other words, digests include all emails sent during a specific time-frame (day or week) and can help reduce the volume of traffic in your in-box! You can also choose not to receive emails and to just read the messages directly on the Group’s webpage. To set (or change) your settings, go to “Edit Membership” and make the appropriate selections.
A message sent to DCCeliac@yahoogroups.com will be distributed (after approval) to everyone in the group. It’s a great way to share news about events, food items, friendly restaurants, etc. It’s also a useful resource for asking questions of other group members. All messages sent to the Group can be reviewed in the “Messages” section of the Group page. (The Message archives includes over 6,000 message spanning many years on a variety of topics!)

Restaurant Database
One of the Yahoo Group’s features is the GF Restaurants Database, which contains information on local restaurants that are friendly to celiacs. It includes all of the places listed in the DCMCO Members’ Favorites Booklet, as well as new information shared on the list serv in between printings of the booklet. It also includes local locations for all of the chain restaurants noted in the booklet. The database is updated at least quarterly with new information from the list serv and/or other sources. (Please help us populate the database by sending in new recommendations!)
You should be able to get right to the database by entering these links into your browser:
• http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/DCCeliac/database?method=reportRows&tbl=1
Alternatively, you can access the database by going into your Yahoo account; then going onto your account’s Groups page (go to "Account information" and click on the link to "Groups" on the right hand side); and getting into the DC Celiac Group. At the DC Celiac Group’s home page there is a list of options on the left-hand side -- about 2/3 of the way down is the "Database" link. Click on "Database" and you'll see GF Restaurants.
Clicking on GF Restaurants will take you into the database page, with a "Search this table" option at the top of the page. You can search for terms that appear in any of the fields:
• restaurant name
• address
• city, state and zip
• phone
• webpage
• any recommended meals or GF menu availability (see box below)
• member-recommended restaurant
• type of food (see box below)
So, if you were interested in places JUST in a certain zip code or city, you’d enter that information into the search box and your results should pop right up. Likewise, if you only wanted places with a GF menu, or places serving Mexican food, put those terms into the search box and you will get a list back! Restaurants where members have eaten and had good experiences have an X in the “member recommended” field – otherwise the restaurant has been suggested to be good, or to have a GF menu, but the experience has not been confirmed by anyone (or has not been reported back to the group).
Useful search terms: GF menu, GF spree, GF options
Types of cuisine: American, Asian, Australian, Bakery, Belgian, Brazilian, Burgers,
Burmese, Caribbean, Cheese, Chicken, Cheese, Chili, Chinese, European, Fast Food,

Thai, Seafood, Spanish, Tapas, Tex-Mex, Vietnamese
Files
At the DC Celiac Group’s home page there is a list of options on the left-hand side -- about 1/3 of the way down is the "Files" link. Click on "Database" and you'll see the list of file folders. There are folders of local GF menus and restaurants, GF product lists, GF restaurants outside of DC, members’ favorites, recipes, and newsletters. Feel free to add to the folders or send updates and information to Susan@Susanflinn.com and I can update the files for you.
